Religion as one of the main factors in human life has been the subject of many studies and researches, especially on psychological concepts. Since religious teachings have come down from human's Creator, who knows what are expedient and beneficial to him, utilizing them will contribute much to the psychology. One of the important subjects in psychology is the human's mental health, and the Islamic teachings in this field can provide better solutions for this scientific discipline.

The present paper tries to study the relation between one of the fundamental sections of religion, i.e. otherworldliness, and mental health. To do so, it first gives a general explanation of these two conceptions, and then presents a theoretical explanation of their relationship. This discussion can be used as a prelude to field studies and empirical researches.

AliMorad HabibVand

(M.A. in clinical psychology of Free Islamic University – Research and Technology Unit)

This research was conducted under the title of: “study of the relationship of religious orientation and psychological disorders and educational achievement in students of Free Islamic and Payam-e Nur Universities of Marand”. The population of the research consisted of 7500 students in these universities; of these, 350 were selected by cluster sampling. The research method was descriptive and of correlation type. To gather data, the questionnaires of “religious attitude and belief” and “SCL-90-R questionnaire of psychological disorders” were used. To measure their educational achievement, the averages of Student's last scores were used. After data-gathering, descriptive statistics (mode mean, median, table and diagram) were used to describe data, and inferential statistics (correlation, T-test) were used for analyzing data.

Analysis of results supported the 12 hypotheses of the research. The relation between religious orientation and psychological disorder was negative at level of P<0.01. This was the same in all nine subscales of psychological disorder test. As for the relation between variables of educational achievement and religious orientation, the result was positive at level of P<0.01. As for the relationship between psychological disorder and educational achievement, this was negative at level of P<0.01. KEY WORDS: student, educational achievement, religious orientation, psychological disorders.

To analyze data, the statistical method of Pearson’s Correslation Quefficient was used.

Calculation of Pearson’s Correslation Quefficient shows a direct and significant relationship between F.A.D and G.H.Q scores on level p<0/001. The other findings also show a significant relationship at level of p<0/001 between the efficiency of family and the general health of its memebers on one hand and the parent’s economic status on the other.

All subjects answered two questionnaires: “the GHQ-28 questionnaire for measuring general health” and “the measure of religious orientation”. Both measures enjoy an appropriate validity. Then the data were analyzed using Pearson’s Correlation, Statistical T-test and the Multi-variable Regression Analysis method. The results showed that among all main vari ables and the related demographic ones, only the variable of religious orientation is the most appropriate variable for predicting general well-being and mental health of the subjects.
